October 7, 2018 By Homefrik Team

When you are set to buy one Lawn Mower, it is important to know all the Types of Mowers available. Here we would like to list all the types, along with their functionalities. All of them serve a unique purpose and are best when used in the right manner. Do keep in mind that you choose only best lawn mowers.

A Lawn Mower comes with one or more blades which does the leveling of the grass surface.

Types of Lawn Mowers – Must Know before Buying

The main classifications in the lawn mowers are based on rotation type, the energy source used, and finally the newly released. These new kind of lawn mowers are the results of latest technology, and most of them are high-end by nature.

  • Based on Rotation, we have Cylinder and the Rotary Lawn Mower.
  • Based on Energy Source; Electric, Gas, and the Manual Mower. Lawn mowers which operate on current/any particular gas, and finally the Manual unit.
  • The other types include the Hover Mower and Robotic Mower.

Following are the Different Types of Lawn Mowers, while some of them are new additions.

Cylinder Lawn Mower

Cylinder Lawn Mower

In a cylinder mower, you will find a horizontal blade which makes perfect cuts on the grass. It has got 5 to 12 blades exposed in the front of the mower. As soon as you move the mower, the cylinder rotates with trapping and cutting the grass parts. With the increase in the number of blades, you will get more precise cuts.

But it has got one drawback, that is it works perfectly for short grasses compared to the long grasses. Therefore, you will be required to do the cutting task twice a week, or at least once a week. Otherwise, cylinder mowers won’t be of much use to you.

Rotary Lawn Mower

You will find one large blade included, which is placed underneath. It runs at high speed and chops the grass perfectly. Most of the systems come with an integral box which collects all the mulch. The main difference found in this type of mower is the presence of vertical axis, and the way blade runs while working. Here the cutting begins from the top of the grass.

If you wish to get stripes for the yard, then it is possible with this Rotary Mower. You need to attach one rear roller on the unit, which will flatten the grass as it is cut. As soon as light falls on this flattened grass, the reflection gives out a different shade. You may feel that the grass is colored on one side.

Push Reel Mower

Push Reel Mower

Go Traditional! This one is a manual unit, and here the person has to put in the efforts for pushing the mower. These mowers are easy with the usage, as they don’t have any advanced feature on it. As soon as you stop pushing the mower, the cutting also stops. It is recommended for small lawn areas, and not for large uneven yards.

Walk-Behind Power Lawn Mower

Walk-Behind Power Lawn Mower

You will find both the rotary as well as the reel(manual, no-pollution system) in this Walk-Behind systems. Both electric, as well as gas run lawn mowers, are available for this. In the power category, the most popular one is the Rotary Mower.

However, the rotary ones are used more compared to the reel mower. And the reason is that rotary mowers are less expensive and even easy on the maintenance side compared to the reel mower. Even the rotary unit is capable of handling long grasses and other unwanted plants.

Ride-On Lawn Mower

Ride-On Lawn Mower

From the name itself, you could make out that, on this mower, you could sit and do the job of mowing. If you have got large lawns, then you can get one ride-on mower in that case. They fall between a manual mower and a tractor unit. Here you will get three types of systems, namely manual, hydrostatic as well as electric. Electric one being the costliest.

Hover Mower

Hover Mower

The Hover Mowers are light in weight and also easy on the handling side. This mower creates a cushion kind of thing between the mower and the lawn. In this way, the mower does not touch the ground; it floats on the air. You can make use of this mower for sloppy or uneven surfaces. Compact in shape, and can be easily stored too.

Robotic Mower

Robotic Mower

We got the final type of mower which has emerged recently. Now you don’t have to take the pain of moving around the lawn; the Robot mower will do it for you. You need to lay one boundary wire surrounding the lawn, and the mower will consider this space as the working area. After it is done with the mowing, will return to the charging station back.
